A traditional NVR is a closed hardware box that records from a fixed number of cameras, usually of the same manufacturer. Synology Surveillance Station is software-defined: it runs on a Synology NAS and connects to any ONVIF-compatible camera regardless of brand — over 20,000 camera models. It adds AI-based video analytics, multi-site management across unlimited locations, and cloud-backup of recordings to Surveillance365. The NAS also runs other workloads (file storage, backup) simultaneously.
Camera capacity depends on the NAS model and the number of Surveillance Station licences installed. Entry-level NAS devices typically support 8-16 cameras with adequate recording storage. Higher-spec NAS hardware scales to 100 or more cameras. Two licences are included free per NAS; additional camera licences are purchased separately. Sentire sizes the NAS and licence count based on your camera count, resolution, and retention requirements after a site survey.
In most cases, yes. Surveillance Station is compatible with over 20,000 camera models via the ONVIF standard and individual manufacturer integrations. If your existing cameras are IP cameras and support ONVIF, they can likely be connected to Surveillance Station without replacement. Sentire tests compatibility during the PoC phase before committing to a full deployment.
Surveillance365 is Synology's cloud service for off-site backup of CCTV recordings. Selected footage is encrypted and replicated to Synology's cloud storage, providing a copy that survives physical damage to or theft of the NAS. This is particularly relevant for Kenya DPA 2019 compliance, where footage may be needed as evidence and the recording device could be a target in an incident. The 30-day free PoC includes access to Surveillance365 so you can evaluate the cloud backup capability in your environment.
Synology Deep Video Analytics uses a dedicated AI processor (available on DS923+ and higher NAS models, or via the NVR1218 dedicated hardware) to analyse video streams in real time. It detects and classifies objects (people, vehicles, faces) and generates alerts based on specific conditions, such as a person entering a restricted zone, a vehicle left unattended, or a face match against a watchlist. Alerts are specific and actionable, in contrast to pixel-change motion detection which triggers on any movement.
Synology Surveillance Station supports an edge storage fallback: cameras that support SD card or local storage continue recording locally if the connection to the NAS is interrupted. When the NAS comes back online, the recordings are automatically synchronised from the camera's local storage, filling the gap. This is configured per-camera during setup. For critical monitoring points, Sentire recommends cameras with SD card slots for this reason.
